What is Crossfit?

A short video about us and what CrossFit is all about.

What is CrossFit and why should I choose CrossFit GSL over other locations or a gym membership?

CrossFit is “CONSTANTLY VARIED, FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENTS PERFORMED AT HIGH INTENSITY.” It’s a core strength and conditioning program. At CrossFit GSL, athletes perform functional movements at high intensity, giving you a comprehensive, full-body workout in under an hour. Classes are instructor-led and peer-driven, providing an excellent mixture of individual coaching and group motivation.

CrossFit is an incredibly effective method of burning fat and building muscle. Workouts change daily and are scaled to each athlete eliminating boredom and plateaus.

Anyone can excel at CrossFit GSL if they have the right attitude. We will change your life and how you view health and fitness. Our classes are coached, so you get the right mix of education, encouragement and challenge.

CrossFit Great Salt Lake’s approach is not about specializing in one fitness program but we deliberately attempt to optimize physical competencies in each of the 10 different fitness characteristics for obtaining General Physical Preparedness (GPP.) GPP is the ability to perform any physical task at any given time. The CrossFit program was developed to ENHANCE an individual’s competency at ALL PHYSICAL TASKS, in and outside the gym. These ten characteristics are here below:

1. Cardiovascular / Respiratory Endurance:

The ability of body systems to gather, process, and deliver oxygen.

2. Strength:

The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply force.

3. Stamina:

The ability of body systems to process, deliver, store, and utilize energy.

4. Flexibility:

The ability to maximize the range of motion at a given joint.

5. Power:

The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply maximum force in minimum time.

6. Speed:

The ability to minimize the time cycle of a repeated movement.

7. Agility:

The ability to minimize transition time from one movement pattern to another.

8. Balance:

The ability to control the placement of the bodies center of gravityin relation to its support base.

9. Coordination:

The ability to combine several distinct movement patterns intoa singular distinct movement.

10. Accuracy:

The ability to control movement in a given direction or at a given intensity.

“Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat. Practice and train major lifts: Deadlift, clean, squat, presses, C&J and snatch. Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstand. pirouettes, flips, splits and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc., hard and fast. Five or six days a week mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow.

Keep workouts short and intense. Regularly learn and play new sports.”
